The Design Process
The first step of the design process is to understand the environment with which the building will engage: the topography, vegetation, light and views, and the position of the building in relation to all of the above. Secondly — and just as important — is creating a building that meets the needs and lifestyle of its inhabitants.
"The house engages the site; living in the house, we inhabit the site."
A house is both private and open, intimate and inviting; a home is the atmosphere we build within the walls of a house: a refuge from the world outside. Both the private spaces and the shared spaces of designs are important in creating dwellings that we can share with family and friends: our homes.

Environmental Design
Overall, we must consider how the design of a structure relates to the earth that we inhabit.
Sustainable design is to use resources, land, and energy with maximum efficiency — considering renewable energy sources like wind, water, the sun, and the earth itself — without compromising the health and needs of future generations
...to touch the earth without destroying it.
